OpenAI has reduced prices for its top GPT-5.6 Sol model aimed at developers. The cut is more than 20 percent and will last for the next three months.
The change took effect on the company’s application programming interface, or API. It is also rolling out to eligible credit plans for ChatGPT Work and the coding tool Codex. Prices for regular Pro, Plus, and Business subscriptions stay the same.
Under the new rates, GPT-5.6 Sol costs $4 for every one million input tokens and $20 for every one million output tokens in standard short-context use. The old prices were $5 for input tokens and $30 for output tokens. That means input costs drop by 20 percent while output costs fall by about one-third.
OpenAI made the move as it faces stronger competition. Rivals include Anthropic’s Claude models and several Chinese AI systems. Anthropic currently lists its Claude Fable 5 model at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. Its Claude Opus 5 model sits at $5 input and $25 output.
This is not the first price change for the GPT-5.6 family. In late July, OpenAI cut rates for its mid-tier Terra model by 20 percent and for the lower-cost Luna model by 80 percent. Those earlier cuts came after the company found ways to run the models more efficiently.
GPT-5.6 Sol is OpenAI’s strongest model in the current series. It is used for complex coding, reasoning, and agent-style tasks. Developers who rely on the API for high-volume work will see the biggest savings during the three-month window, which runs at least through mid-November.
The company has not said what will happen to Sol prices after the promotion ends. For now, the lower rates apply only to developer and credit-based usage. Regular ChatGPT subscribers will not notice any change in their monthly bills.
The price drop follows a pattern of OpenAI adjusting costs as AI models become more efficient to run. It also reflects the intense race among major AI firms to attract developers who build apps and tools on top of these systems.
