German startup Isar Aerospace has successfully sent its Spectrum rocket into orbit, becoming the first purely commercial European launch company to achieve the milestone.
The two-stage Spectrum rocket lifted off on 5 September 2026 from Andøya Spaceport in northern Norway. About seven minutes after launch, the vehicle reached orbit. The mission, called “Onward and Upward,” later completed a circularization burn and successfully deployed its payloads.
The rocket carried five CubeSats and one experiment into low Earth orbit. The payloads were selected through a German Space Agency program supported by the European Space Agency’s Boost! initiative. They came from universities and small companies across Europe.
Isar Aerospace was founded in 2018 near Munich. Spectrum stands about 28 meters tall and is designed to carry up to 1,000 kilograms to low Earth orbit. This was the company’s second flight. The first attempt in March 2025 failed shortly after liftoff.
Company CEO Daniel Metzler said the success opens space access from continental Europe and gives commercial and institutional customers a new option. The European Space Agency also welcomed the flight, noting it as the first orbital success by a European Launcher Challenge provider.
Until now, Europe has relied mainly on government-backed launch providers. The Spectrum mission is seen as an important step toward more independent and competitive European launch services. It is also the first successful orbital launch from Western European soil.
Isar Aerospace now plans to move toward more frequent commercial flights while expanding production capacity.
