A new AI model called Ox Alpha has drawn strong interest from developers and technology watchers. Many are trying to figure out who built it.
The model first appeared last week on the AI platform OpenRouter. It is listed as a “stealth model,” meaning the company behind it has chosen to stay anonymous for now. OpenRouter describes it as a reasoning model made for coding, long-running agent tasks, and real production work.
Ox Alpha stands out for a few reasons. It offers a very large context window of about one million tokens. That means it can handle large amounts of code or documents in a single request. It also accepts text, images, and video as input. During this early preview period, access is free.
Stripe CEO Patrick Collison tried the model and called it “very impressive.” His company is in the process of acquiring OpenRouter, which has added extra attention to the release.
So far, no major AI lab has claimed responsibility for Ox Alpha. Online speculation has focused mainly on Chinese companies, especially Z.ai and its GLM family of models. Some technical tests of the model’s tokenizer and response patterns appear to match those systems. Other theories have pointed to Microsoft or other labs, but nothing has been confirmed.
Independent sites have also appeared that let people chat with Ox Alpha for free while it remains in stealth mode. Early users say it performs well on complex coding and multi-step agent jobs.
The model’s sudden arrival and strong early feedback show how competitive the AI field has become. Labs sometimes release models anonymously to gather real-world feedback before making a full public launch.
For now, Ox Alpha remains a mystery. Developers continue to test it, and the search for its true creator continues.
