Starting Friday, millions of Aadhaar cardholders across India will finally be able to update their personal details online without visiting enrollment centers. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has rolled out a fully digital update system that allows citizens to change their name, address, date of birth, and mobile number directly through the myAadhaar portal.

This marks the biggest transformation of the Aadhaar infrastructure since its inception, offering greater convenience and faster processing times for over 1.3 billion registered users.

Aadhaar Updates Made Simple: No More Queues or Paperwork

According to the official UIDAI announcement, users can now log in to the myAadhaar portal and complete demographic updates without needing to upload physical supporting documents. The system automatically verifies details against existing government databases, such as PAN, passport, driving license, and ration card records.

In its statement, UIDAI said:

“The verification process will now be completed digitally using linked government documents, making the process both faster and more reliable.”

This change eliminates the need for Aadhaar Seva Kendra visits for routine updates, significantly reducing wait times. Most updates are expected to be processed within minutes instead of days.

However, biometric updates — including fingerprints, iris scans, and photographs — will still require an in-person visit to authorized centers for security and identity verification.

New Fee Structure Comes Into Effect from November 1

Alongside the digital update rollout, UIDAI has announced a revised fee structure for Aadhaar services. From November 1 onwards:

  • Demographic updates (such as name, address, or mobile number) will cost ₹75.
  • Biometric updates (like fingerprints or photo changes) will cost ₹125.

Children between ages 5–7 and 15–17 are eligible for free biometric updates, providing a relief to families during mandatory re-enrollment periods.

Furthermore, UIDAI has announced that online document uploads will remain free until June 14, 2026, allowing users plenty of time to make necessary corrections without incurring fees.

PAN-Aadhaar Linking Deadline: A Crucial Reminder

The new digital rules arrive as India approaches another key compliance deadline — the mandatory Aadhaar-PAN linking. As per the latest government directive, all Permanent Account Number (PAN) holders must link their Aadhaar by December 31, 2025.

Failure to do so will result in PAN deactivation from January 1, 2026, making it invalid for financial transactions and tax filings.

UIDAI officials cautioned:

“The Aadhaar-PAN linking deadline is critical. Missing it could cause disruptions in financial operations and tax compliance.”

New PAN applicants will also have to complete Aadhaar-based verification during the registration process.

Banks and financial institutions have already integrated Aadhaar verification into their KYC processes — allowing authentication through OTP, video calls, or digital verification, further pushing India toward a more paperless and secure ecosystem.

How the New Online System Benefits Citizens

This reform is part of India’s broader Digital India initiative, which focuses on integrating technology to simplify governance and citizen services.

Here are the key benefits of the new Aadhaar update system:

  1. No physical visits required for demographic changes.
  2. Instant digital verification using linked documents.
  3. Reduced costs and extended free update window.
  4. Faster turnaround time — updates completed within minutes.
  5. More transparency and less paperwork.

Experts believe this system will not only save time for citizens but also help government agencies maintain more accurate and up-to-date demographic records.

What Citizens Should Do Next

To make use of the new online update system:

  1. Visit the myAadhaar portal.
  2. Log in using your Aadhaar number and OTP.
  3. Select “Update Aadhaar Online.”
  4. Modify your name, address, date of birth, or mobile number.
  5. Confirm changes and pay applicable fees (if any).

Citizens are advised to verify their PAN-Aadhaar linking status immediately and complete it before the 2025 deadline to avoid disruptions in tax or financial activities.

The Road Ahead for Digital Identity in India

With this shift, UIDAI is moving closer to a completely digital identity ecosystem. Experts suggest that this may pave the way for AI-powered verification and blockchain-backed document storage in the future, ensuring stronger security and transparency.

As the system evolves, Aadhaar’s digital backbone will likely play a bigger role in government schemes, financial inclusion, and online identity verification.

UIDAI’s move underscores India’s ambition to make citizen services fast, secure, and accessible anywhere, anytime — a model other countries may soon look to emulate.
